The best thing it does is get children out of the nest. However, a stint in the military will do the same and it provides funds higher education later.

Not only that but it is a heck of a lot more fun for a young fellow than hanging around a cubical for decades? }};-D

One of the things I loved about the military was the culture of constantly learning new things. You didn't always "have to" and many didn't take advantage but it was there for those who did want it.
