Thank you for your kind reply. I'll check your link.

But I'm curious. Why are annuities rarely the right thing to do?

First, in our situation, we have no alternative. Part of the money we'd need at age 50 must come from our employer TSAs. We must take them on an annuitized basis in order to avoid the 10% tax penalty---at least until we reach age 59.

Second, I'm not in love with annuities, but in our case, they would provide some of our guaranteed fixed income. We don't intend to rely exclusivly on annuities for income, but as a fixed rate investment, why would they be any different from T-bills, for example?

Our plan is to take most of our TSAs at age 50, and move a portion of our investment cash to something like T-bills to give us a guaranteed minimum annual income. The rest of our money will be split between the stock market, and (currently) profitable rental real estate (which we hope will be more profitable as time goes by).

I would love to post a detailed version of our current situation and our plan on a discussion board for critique. If you are interested in critiquing, I will do so. If not, I would appreciate any suggestions you might have where I could post our plan.

I could certainly use help and perspective with my planning, since I only have one nest egg and don't want to blow it!
