Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my question. It was very helpful in clarifying my thinking on the question of taking a large position in long term bonds at the present time, as recommended by Financial Engines. I think I'll skip the long term bonds for now. One complicating factor is that we live in a state with high income tax on top of the federal tax, so I am thinking about an inter. term bond fund specific to our state, for the money which is in taxable accounts. For the IRAs, maybe an ETF or an index fund that is bonds??
