Apparently there are different ways to look at the difference between 75w90 and 75w140 and I am still a bit unclear about what the practical effect of the difference would be while operating the pump. You helped me think about it.

But I found the part number and ended up ordering the oem replacement and replacing the gear oil I had put in the pump.

My guess is that what I put in is not as high quality as the synthetic valvoline product that I had put in it, but I've had it for a number of years and haven't had any problems with what was in there originally. I suspect that Todd is right and the pump tolerances are pretty loose.
