Thanks for the ideas. Where could we find out more about the Cypress Tree Fund that you mentioned? I searched four sites and found no matches. She is probably going to sell the Vanguard fund tomorrow but doesn't have a definite plan yet for the money. She is looking at individual stocks herself, go Mom!

It's not conservative but we had previously looked at the QQQ Nasdaq 100 index. However, this was my idea. I know there is also the DIA Dow index fund, in addition to an S&P 500. I think a combination would be good diversification, but of course still risky. But as she says, she feels like right now she is losing money on a savings account. She does have a small portfolio of stocks she selected herself just this year.
