Thanks for the info on the deadline. I passed it on. They are going to file the amended returns.

A little harsh on the counting the silver thing. This person is very generous (has given me money gifts in the past and has funded an annual merit scholarship at our local university for many years). This person has kind of been screwed over by tax circumstances in the past - particularly when their spouse died - they had to pay something like $15,000 in extra taxes that year just because the spouse happened to die when there was a big market dip. Legally it was owed, but morally it sucked big time. I don't blame them if their first reaction was not to be extremely eager to go through the hassle and expense.
