How nice of the government to take something that is already confusing and double our fun. Do you have any suggestions as to where I could learn more about AMT in a user friendly way?

Sorry - user-friendly and AMT are mutually exclusive. There is an article on AMT in the FAQ. Beyond that, my best suggestion is to either get professional assistance with planning, or spend some time with a tax program (like Turbo Tax, Tax Cut, etc.) and play with your best guesses for 2004 to see how AMT will affect you in your situation.
