Thanks for the suggestions, haywool. I was wondering how your part of Illinois prairieland compares with Champaign County.

They do say cattle raising has moved west. I would be surprised to find many cattle in Champaign County these days. And probably almost no fences.

Big meat packing has moved west too. Iowa Beef and MBPXL ship cuts directly to stores rather than sides of beef.

They tell me corn farmers could not survive without fertilizer.

And of course grain elevators are a dominant feature of the landscape. They seem not to get much attention. Much more goes into old red barns.
