Thanks for your help- I just received e-mail from a Business Week writer that just completed a two part series on the subject- this particular article was on Goldman Sachs- his e-mail generalized to say that probably by and large they don't earn as much as they charge. I have just retired after 30 years as a Physicist so I can handle the math- I'm looking to extract around 6-7% per year- Analysis done by TMF says you can do an inflation adjusted 6% at a very high probability assuming ~ 3%. They averaged this across a multiplicity of starting points to factor in the possibility of starting in both up and down markets.

My approach to keeping up with the experts will be to seek and subscribe to above average "fund letters" this will cost far less than the 1% fee. Thanks again
