Thanks to everyone for their quick responses, information, opinions and suggestions. I posted the question because I was doing some research on the possibility of taking certain deductions and still had some confusion. Even on this board there are differing opinions, which suggests to me that there may be more than one right (or wrong) answer. I use an accountant to prepare my taxes and ultimately will trust his judgement about what I can and cannot deduct, but I always like to try and have an understanding of the situation.
