That reminded me of the "helpful" guy on a train from the port (Civitavecchia) to Rome. I thought he was just being nice. It was a day trip, so I didn't have any luggage to help with. And I didn't need a guide once we got to Rome (I already had it planned, knew where I was going). He tried to get me to pay for his advice. Yeah, right. I don't carry much cash anyway. It wasn't for several minutes that I realized what he was doing and where this was going. I pretty much refused everything after that, and tried not to talk to him (without being overly rude). When he became more strident I simply said "no". He wasn't happy. Too bad.

I could see how some folks might have been cowed, though. So watch out for "helpful" strangers offering unsolicited advice. They're likely to want payment.
