That was an obvious no-brainer.

That's true now. But at the time vacuum tubes were the established reliable technology. People had learned to deal with the problem that they made lots of heat and would burn out from time to time.

Transistors still have temperature limitations. Vacuum tubes are still used in some critical applications (per my EE textbook from 50 years ago).
