The biggest controversy over the new DSM V is that the direct National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announced that NIMH won't use the DSM any more.

NIMH funds research, they don't deal with patients directly. But now they will use their own Research Domain Criteria. The director says that the DSM is "symptom based" and that is no longer acceptable science. The Research Domain Criteria will use "emerging science" instead of the DSM to classify illnesses.

Except, of course, that there aren't any definitive test procedures for mental illnesses yet.

NAMI and the APA will still use the DSM.
