The Bracero Program (from the Spanish term bracero, meaning "manual laborer" or "one who works using his arms") was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated on August 4, 1942,

Because the US was in a huge war and drafting able bodied men as fast as they could be trained and equipped, the extra labor was desperately needed. The US was not only arming and fueling England, we were feeding it, as well as 6 million of our own in uniform.

Listening to certain pols and media blowhards now, the agenda is not guest workers or braceros, it's keeping foreigners out, period. A return to the immigration policies of the late 1920s.
