The choice between an index fund and an ETF depends on what kind of investments you are making.

If you are the kind of person who puts $250/month into your Roth and wants that money to be invested right away, an index fund is a much better way to go. You don't have to pay every time you buy.

SPY costs you commission every time you buy or sell. If you don't buy/sell often, it is a great deal.
