The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States; After considering this for a while, I have come to realize that the clause states "...to provide for ...general Welfare of the United States" it does not say for the people of the United States. With this distinction in mind, I believe the General Welfare intended to be provided is for the nation as a whole and not for each individual. I would submit then that providing socialist programs does NOT benefit the nation as a whole.
