The cost is dependent on what level you buy at. Here's the explanation:

http://www.ancestry.com/cs/offers/subscribe

They don't have World Membership listed, which is what I bought, but it seems to be what they call "Plus."

They give you a 14 day free membership, but you have to give them your credit card, and you have to cancel on the 13th day or you'll be charged. (That's one of their less pleasant habits.

They have things set up so you can create a tree and add all sorts of Sources and other pieces of information to your ancestors. If you decide you don't want to purchase a membership, you'll still be allowed access to your tree, and the Community and Message boards are free. The value of Ancestry is the huge amount of sources available.

What some people do is sign up for a month or so, do as much work as possible, then cancel their membership and carry on as they have been doing, updating their tree along the way, then, in a year or so apply for a one-month membership, cram as much research as possible into that month, cancel, and so on. It's helpful for people who don't have a lot of money to spare, but who like the convenience of using the Ancestry database.

HTH,

Nancy
