The cost of the modules is less than a dollar per watt, but the cost of construction and installation is four dollars per watt. Builders might "work out how to do the job better," but there's no equivalent to Swanson's Law in the building industry. Have we reached the point where the costs of solar are going to be determined more by the costs of the infrastructure to support it (plants and land) rather than the modules?

A good mental exercise is to assume PV panels are made of plywood and plan/cost accordingly. Construction, storage and transmission become dominant. Then plug in various solar conversion efficiencies.
