The cost of the modules is less than a dollar per watt, but the cost of construction and installation is four dollars per watt.

People are still installing projects that don't pay for themselves. Here in the Chicago area a local mosquito abatement district installed solar panels and a small rooftop wind turbine. The cost was $180K and they received a subsidy of $90K.

The project saved $300 in August. If we assume a yearly savings of $2500 the payback period is 72 years!
