This fun read from Atlantic Magazine takes an interesting look at Congressional Democrats:

Going down the ranks, the public-affairs software firm Quorum reckoned that the average age of the Democratic House leadership is 72, fully 24 years more than the average of the Republican House leadership. Infamously, the three leading Democrats in the House are 79, 78, and 79, for a staggering combined age of 236, making the Democratic leadership team older, in aggregate, than the Constitution itself.
The party’s congressional gerontocracy has now inevitably bled into the field of presidential candidates. The front-runner, Joe Biden, is 76. Second place, according to most polls, belongs to Bernie Sanders, who’s a year older than Biden. They hope to replace the oldest man ever to be elected president. He’s younger than both of them.

There's a simple explanation. The GOP had their young far-right (tea party, "freedom caucus") takeover several years ago--remember all the older guys getting primaried (eg, Richard Lugar) or retiring under threat of same? The Democrats have barely begun a similar (but less extreme-) progressive "young turk" shift.

PS--Interesting you picked the House, where more Democrats are among the oldest, since 4 of the 5 oldest senators are R:

Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)
Don Young (R-AK)
Chuck Grassley (R-UT)
Jim Inhofe (R-OK)
Pat Roberts (R-KS)

And one of the most senile in the Republican party gerontocracy left just last year when he was 84. Orrin Hatch was undergoing some sort of brain disorder, perhaps just plain old senility, before he exited. That guy ruined his conservative bonifides before he left.

And at 77, McConnell himself is no spring chicken. Fall turkey perhaps?

A turkey fer sure.

Ron Brownstein:

“McConnell has been the immovable object: He’s frustrated House Democrats by systematically blocking Senate votes so far on the lengthening list of bills they have passed, from gun control to additional protections for patients with preexisting health problems.”

“But McConnell’s blockade faces a new challenge as the House turns to a series of bills meant to fight foreign interference in the 2020 election. Those measures, aimed at defending fundamental American institutions from foreign subversion, may be tougher for the Kentucky Republican to portray as partisan overreach than the bills the House has passed so far. And that could make them an irresistible force that strains his overall strategy of preventing action on any House legislation.”

And in support of what I just said...another older (70something), long-serving Democrat is being primaried.

“Jamaal Bowman, a middle school principal from the Bronx, will announce on Tuesday his plans to challenge Rep. Eliot Engel, the New York Democrat who leads the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, in the 2020 race,” the New York Times reports.

“The contest could serve as a key test of whether liberal insurgent groups can convert a surge of energy on the left into successful challenges of members of the Democratic Party establishment.”
