I didnt notice this in any of the bugout bag posts, but the easiest way to start a fire is steel wool and a battery.

Just put a piece of steel wool in the glove box of your car for any emergency where you may possibly need to start a fire (I am not talking about pyros here, just getting lost on a MT road or running out of gas and you need to stay warm while waiting for help to arrive). Since just about everyone already has a cell phone, all you need to worry about having around is the steel wool. If no cell phone, then you will want to put a 9V battery in the car as well (segregated from the steel wool).

It does not work with a singe AA or AAA battery, it actually takes two of those batteries (stacked end to end) to make it work.

So, imagining a cell phone battery or a 9V battery. Just hold a piece of the steel wool down onto one of the connectors with your thumb and then touch the same wad of steel wool to the other connector and it will immediately become a flame. Make sure you have some sort of tinder or something to place it on quickly.

Personally, in my survival kit for backpacking I have a 9V battery and some steel wool and then for the tinder I have dryer lint (and/or) cotton balls that have been soaked/filled with vaseline. It is all very light and does not take up much room and will easily burn for a couple of minutes. All this can be put stored in 2 or 3 small prescription bottles.

Go out on the back porch and give it a shot if you are skeptical!! Your kids will be impressed!!
