The economic damage being done is huge and horrendous. I hope sanity returns soonest.

The economic damage was going to happen regardless.

The airlines had stopped flying to China before the President banned them. Apple shut down its stores before retail was told to. Starbucks closed all its cafes in China without being told to.

People stopped going to movies, Broadway shows, baseball games because they’d had to sit right next to somebody else who they didn’t know. Grocery stores started opening earlier to accommodate the elderly and that costs them more. Conversely Home Depot and Lowe’s began closing earlier to give their workers time to restock, and that costs them money. Costco created queues out of pallets to keep people separated and limited the numbers in store before local health departments even told them to.

People stopped buying cars. Car factories shut down, not because people stopped buying cars (although that would have happened within a few days anyway) but because the people on the lines stopped coming to work out of fear or because they were sick.

This is not some plot invented by bureaucrats, it happened in real time before the bureaucrats knew what hit them. Crimes, church attendance fell 90% and nobody banned that! Most people value their safety, even if you do not.
