The effort to downplay the need to fight terrorism on the part of the Democrats and left wingers is thereby refuted, and anti-terrorism efforts can be shown to bear fruit.

Democrats do not downplay the need to fight terrorism. They merely disagree on tactics. And the recent threat supports their position.

The Administration has emphasized military responses to terrorist threats, under the argument that "taking the fight" to foreign soil would reduce either the willingness or capability of terrorist groups to plot attacks against us here. That doesn't seem to have worked out.

Moreover, prior Democratic candidates were roundly criticized for emphasizing the use of existing law enforcement and intelligence resources to combat terrorism, as opposed to military forces. Once again, we see a terror plot foiled by law enforcement when it wasn't prevented by our military excursions. That seems to support the Democratic, not GOP, tactic on fighting terrorism.

Additionally, now that these terror suspects have been nabbed, it is vitally important that they be effectively prosecuted and jailed. This morning, I saw a British commentator observing that it is crucial that the prosecution phase not be disrupted by inappropriate tactics - which is why there's been limited official statement by the British police. This, too, is in line with Democratic beliefs that law enforcement and intelligent efforts need to scrupulously obey the law, so that loopholes and possible defects in prosecution can be avoided.

And finally, this illustrates yet again the importance of strong and cordial relations with other countries - because not all terror threats will originate in the United States. This means that we can reap benefits if our international relations are more solicitous of the interests of other countries, both on terror-related issues and other issues more generally.

Democratic calls for different counter-terrorism priorities should not be confused with not wanting to fight terror. And so far, it seems that the GOP tactics aren't working out the way they were hoped to.
