The last shutdown, the only impact it had on me was that I was unable to pull off the side of a state highway into a state-maintained scenic-view area. The federal government had put up barricades blocking it off. Why? Because if we had pulled off there, gotten out the binoculars, and looked in exactly the right direction, we would have been able to see Mount Rushmore.

The federal government has a way of making shutdowns as painful as possible for the taxpayers. I remember that the last shutdown (sometime in 2013, I think), my nephew was in Washington, D.C. for a long-awaited school trip and his group had reservations for a White House tour a day or two after the shutdown commenced.

His White House tour was cancelled and he was really, really disappointed.

Shutdowns are like that, ya know. Disappointing all around.
