The level of Rose's compensation has nothing whatsoever to do with the average pay of a rail yard worker. Neither is there any correlation between the pay of the CEO of Wal Mart and a typical cashier

Perhaps there should be more of a correlation?

Berkshire is a pretty special case in that management performance is measured in thoughtful, reasoned fashion. Managers work for Buffett and the other owner-shareholders of Berkshire.

Most CEOs are beholden to nobody as boards are too often hand-picked by CEOs. No one is minding the store, so the cashiers (er, I mean CEOs) can rob the place blind.

The worst part is they believe they deserve it.
