The more I think about the whole thing, the more upset I get at them for being so inflexible!! Am I crazy for even considering buying if I have to pay the capital gains? The tax will be either around 3000 or 6000 depending on what tax bracket we fall into.

You may want to save a little upset for yourself for not understanding the tax situation before you signed the contract for the house. This tax law's now been around for awhile.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask them to come down on their price or to extend the move-in date for us. Do you?

Depends on the market. If they can sell to to someone else without doing those things, why should they ?
