The number of gears and the speed at which they are changed are two separate things. It isn't some new tech that enables faster changes. You could make a TH350 from the seventies change gears lightening fast with a few modifications. The speed at which an OEM transmission changes gears is in large part determined by the automaker's perception of what its target market will prefer.
