The originals I thin drop into the Pictures folder... But they are in a folder or folders of their own, named, dated mmddyy, so it helps

Just a suggestion, although it may be too late for you to change now, is to go to yyyymmdd naming format. That way, the operating system sorts them properly for you.

My camera (Sony) helps me out by putting the photos in folders named NNNymmdd, where the initial NNN is a semirandom number that keeps multiple cameras from using the same name. When I copy the photos off the card into the computer, it's an easy change to correct the year.
