The plot sickens. I called T-Mobile to inquire if I need my phone unlocked for a new SIM in Germany. After learning what an IMEI number is, and how to find it, the guy says my phone was not purchased from T-Mobile, according to their records. He suggests I go back to the T-Mobile store where I bought it and get them to look it up. 2011, yeah, right. The store is local, so I will do that. It would be too easy to just buy a new phone. No thrill of the hunt.

You shouldn't have to go into a store to get your phone unlocked. Try calling TMobile customer service. Once you provide the IMEI number, they should be able to send you the unlock code.
