The problem in the States is that you cannot give anything away for free! As micrososft gave windows away for a price and the internet explorer was 'free' this breached the US trade laws and hence setup the actions that followed. If Microsoft had sold the windows package with the internet explorer included for $1 more this would not have given the Justice department anything to shoot at.

It is the tall poppy syndrome, [mind you they copied AppleMac to get there and have trashed all other companies that came along] but it was legally done.

As the windows programmers just went from bad to worse one wonders whether Linux or OS2 succcesfully held by a wealthy marketing company could not have knocked Microsoft off its perch a long time ago. History teaches us an important issue in that this singular product was accepted and utilised through good marketing rather than it being a good product! An accident of history in that IBM needed to combat AppleMac and took on board a "nerd" called Bill Gates!

If you have had experience with Microsoft you will be aware that patches were prepared to fix problems, but in the main it appeared that these patches were not given to the Microsoft Techies who were writing the programs. Serious inditement on quality assurance and ability of this company to communicate internally....

Please note that the legislature in Europe has now written into law that all codes for all software products marketed must be available to other programmers on request to integrate 'other' software packages. This is an important step which will make copyright infringement avoidable (by inroducing royalties for that portion utilised of an existing program) and set up newer bigger and better programs based on those that already exist (Windows included).

Yet I doubt anybody would want to use Windows as a base for writing a better program as it may continually crash the newer program!

(nerd in this sense not being derogatory Bill.... just and expression of what you were once!.. can he sue me for that? I plead guilty!)
