The two Irish enclaves need each other MUCH more than they need anyone to the east of their island.

I suppose you could ask if Ireland would consider leaving the EU too so it could make a deal with UK and avoid border controls with Northern Ireland that way.

When EU was formed, countries like Ireland were encouraged to borrow at low German interest rates to raise their economies to minimum EU standards. This borrowing caused some problems for various countries, but Ireland benefited greatly. In Ireland, EU might be sacred.

And if UK does leave the EU, Dublin is one of the places most likely to boom. English speaking. Outsiders welcome. And still the easy access to Europe London once enjoyed.
