The W8 isn't really a W like the VR6 engine isn't really a V6. Real V-layout engines have two banks of cylinders, and a head and valvetrain for each bank There's about 60-90 degrees of V angle between the banks. A VR6 has a 15 degree V, and since it only has one head, it's really a straight-6, just a little staggered.

Think if the W8 as a two very narrow-angle VR4's, whose centerbores aren't on one line, sharing a common crank, and set apart like a two-head V8. Sort of.
