There are literally millions of Americans who are unhappy today because millions of Iraqis went to the polls yesterday.

That's an excellent illustration of how badly the supporters of the Administration misunderstand the critics of the administration.

To believe that there are millions of Americans who are unhappy today, you have to believe that objections to the administration's policies were not based on a reasoned critique. You have to believe that millions of Americans somehow object to democracy in general, or the conduct of an election in Iraq in particular.

That is, of course, absurd. I challenge the author - or you - to find any statements by prominent critics of the war advocating, or even desiring, a poor turnout.

Instead, the author simply assumes that since the objectors are on the "other side" that anything good for "our side" is bad for them. It is exactly that perspective - us vs. them - that precludes a constructive dialogue.
