There are some good things about annuities, like the extra features built into them. But if you don't need the extra feature (or guarantees) then you are better-off not paying the added expenses for them.

Before making the assumption that the expenses in an annuity are higher than a mutual fund, it is a good idea to check out the actual expenses and see for sure. While this is true in most cases, in this particular thread the annuity was through TIAA-CREF, whose expenses are comparable to Vanguard's and lower than most mutual funds.
