There is a broad demographic in the U.S. that believes repaying student loans as rapidly as possible is a duty of honor. To my mind this is just a reactionary response from people who have no idea how muddled the present system is and who are also often envious of anyone who pursued formal education as a way to self-realization or just "success" on their own terms. Through exercising your legitimate deferment options, you demonstrated the potential that more enlightened government policies in support of higher education could result in a more skilled general "workforce" (of "lifetime learners") without putting any additional pressures on our treasury.
