There's a real risk in taking a limited snapshot in time somewhere and extrapolating it to long term. There's a very real difference between being a visitor and being a resident. BIL loves living in San Diego but has had his house at risk from canyon fires twice now. Most of Sis' neighbors in CA north of San Fran lost their homes in fires. Mudslides, earthquakes, high taxes, surely good weather compensates for all that? We lived in the Caribbean for 8 years. There is always a price for paradise and not everyone is willing to pay it. After so many hurricanes frankly I don't deal well with wind anymore, but yes, I'll take something I can see coming and prepare for over earthquakes any day. And hurricanes were not nearly the worst of it.

thrilled to be back on the mainland
