Copyright law "protects" the profits of the producer from competition. Producers of new vehicles and books certainly face competition from used vehicles and books. It's simply an extension of this protection to make all resale of copyrighted or patented products illegal.

imh, non-patent lawyer, opinion, this is a less radical shift than the SCOTUS decreeing that governments can use their eminent domain power to sieze property for the benefit of private, for profit, interests, when the Constitution clearly requires the power only be used for "public use".
