They are in their mid 60's. The total annual cost for their private insurance is about $2500 for both of them. (The public insurance pays the public reimbursement rate, the private insurance pays for whatever additional the private hospital charges above the "public" reimbursement.)

We have that here also for Medicare recipients. We call them "Medi-gap" policies. 1poormom has one.

Expanding Medicare to cover everyone is probably the best solution we have, and the least painful.
