My father is suffering from rapid onset dementia.

He's hospitalized and undergoing medical testing (as *if* there is an identifiable medical issue, we might be able to mitigate or partially reverse some of the symptoms).

In the course of the last 8 weeks he's gone from relatively healthy and holding down a part time job, to a shuffling, confused old man - with the majority of the decline happening in the last two weeks.

He was hospitalized for two days, seemed to perk up a bit and regain some function (at least enough it seemed possible to care for him at home)...and we had to take him back to the hospital after less than 48 hours at home. He's been in patient since that second go 'round.

The decline is so marked I saw actual shock on one doctor's face when he came out of the room. He'd examined him last week during the initial hospitalization, and was fully, out-loud shocked at the decline in a week's time.

Best case scenario is a disease of the central nervous system that we can treat with really powerful, side-effect inducing medicine. There has been an endless round of blood tests, spinal taps, sedation (in his confusion, he made a break for it one night)...we're really having to *HOPE* for a serious medical issue, because it at least offers the possibility of a cure. That's insanity.

He's 64. It's horrific.
