This also needs to be added to HWTSC FAQ, as more an more folks are getting new machines with WinXP or reinstalling WinXP. Such machines should not connect to anything on the 'net before taking care of the following:

1. Enable WinXP's built-in firewall or install and configure a third-party one (not both).

2. Go to Windows Update and install all the recommended patches and security updates. For best results, close all running processes (including the anti-virus application) before going to Windows Update. If you encounter problems at Windows Update, check here first:

3. Install a reliable anti-virus application. Immediately afterward doing so, seek updated virus definitions and run a full system scan. From now on, do both every day you use the machine.
