This echoes the hysteria -- mostly overhyped -- over global computers systems that gripped the world when the calendar was about to click over from 1999 to 2000.

I take exception to the word “hysteria” in the quote. The wildest predictions were overblown but there were notable outages due to the bug. They’re documented on Wikipedia. The problem was mitigated because a lot of people (self included) spent a lot of time ensuring the problem was fixed.

The GPS counter rollover has happened twice now (1999 and 2019) and will surely happen again in 2038. Life will, somehow, go on.
