This is called "destructive testing" and yes, it is a lot of fun. I'm not sure about mobile phones but there are actually standards for a lot of manufactured goods - must be capable of being dropped from "x" height, dipped in boiling oil, if it catches fire then it shouldn't explode, and so on.

It's an interesting article in that it illustrates how the manufacturers of devices ensure that the quality of the product exceeds expectations.

It would be interesting to look for articles on how wireless service companies develop and test their services - not just technically - but with real people, doing "stupid" things. I would bet that these companies will be the ones to rise to the top in the emerging wireless services market.

I'd be interested in anything anyone can find. I've been looking for this kind of information, as I think it will point to some good companies to invest in. I have yet to find a solid example. If I do, I will post it but I'd be interested in any information like this which other fools might come across in their travels.
