This is something that I do a lot and I really have to proof-read carefully everything I write. Let me add that I fully know the correct usage of each version, yet when I'm writing on the fly, the spellings get muddled as I'm trying to tie my thoughts together to put on the page. I used to think people like this were morons, but I can now see how easy it is to mix them up, even when you know the correct usage. So when I see mix-ups of words such as it's and its, their, they're and there, know and now, I try and give the writer the benefit of the doubt.
