This seems to be the economic divide all over again. In rural America, if you loose your job with the area employer (or fail to get a job) most try to survive in agriculture. But for the small farmer who often rents his land, its a brutal life. Perhaps he can feed his family, but its a struggle.

The real question is what can be done about it. Education is usually the best opportunity to get out of rural poverty, but too many fail to take advantage of that route.

I saw a TV program, I think Amanpour on PBS in which speaker was saying manufacturing jobs are being replaced by the information/computer economy. Of course we know there are also jobs in health care and distribution/warehouses/trucking/railroads. Many require additional training. Maybe not enough jobs to go around.

The ideal is the labor intensive business that pays well. Name as many of those as you can. Then lets expand and grow them. Hollywood. Movies. TV. Marijuana growing?
