This subject is near and dear to my heart! I've worked for 22+ years in the natural gas industry; processing and transportation in Olahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. I am currently working for a local Engineering and Construction company, managing a project for the Powder River Basin. Our client won't let us talk about it, but you could have read about it in the Casper and Gillette newspapers. Yes, Coal Bed Methane (CBM) wells are cheap to drill because they are shallow, but producing them is expensive. They typically have high water/gas ratios and you've got to do something with the water. Initially, the state was allowing producers to just dump it on the ground, but with the number of wells forecast, they are going to stop that practice. Colorado will face a similar problem with CBM production in the Craig, Hayden area.

A further problem is that any pipelines built to carry the gas to market must cross federal lands. The BLM administers those lands and grants the Rights Of Ways for the pipelines. The lines also have to cross railroad ROWs. Neither group is very happy about granting ROW, but they EVENTUALLY do. We just built a 24" pipeline from Lysite to Wamsutter. ROW and permitting took 11 months. Construction took 3 months stretched over 8 with biological and archaeological constraints.

For CBM production, drilling is a samll portion of getting the gas to our furnaces.

Miriam, may daughter just went to work for Tetra Tech downtown. Her degree is climatology and she is also involved with air modelling. Small world, eh?
