Three way calling works great. Have him authorize you to talk to them, then they can give you the information over the phone.

Can you set up online access to the accounts?

It can take the IRS a couple of years to catch the error. If the error is small the penalty is not significant. Several years ago I missed a 1099 for $48. I realized it the next year and decided it wasn't worth the effort to file an amended return. Neither the IRS or my state found the problem or didn't consider it worth the cost of pursuing.
