"The sense of offering one's personal energy to help return an ancient culture's most precious possessions to its members is deeply gratifying and rewarding."
a volunteer

I am nominating Tibetan Aid Project of the Tibetan Nyingma Relief Foundation as an outstanding foolanthropy candidate.

Founded in 1969 by Tarthang Tulku, a refugee Tibetan, to provide emergency relief to Tibetan refugees exiled in India and the Himalayas in the wake of the Chinese invasion of Tibet. In recent years it has concentrated on supporting Tibetan monks and nuns and lay people in Tibet, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sikkim, rebuilding monasteries in Tibet, distributing texts, art, and ritual objects to monasteries in Tibet and other Asian lands, organizing pilgrimages for Westerners, and disseminating current information on the situation inside Tibet.

Thousands of hours of volunteer help have enabled the Nyingma organizations to produce over 60,000 Buddhist texts, 100,000 sacred art reproductions, and 17,000 hand-held prayer wheels for distribution to the Tibetan people on nearly a yearly basis. Without these traditional tools, a vital link to transmit the wisdom tradition would be missing. TAP assists in shipping the precious texts overseas and in organizing volunteers on a yearly basis to coordinate ship container loads of books to go to refugees. The energy and excitement of this project are infectious. Volunteers come from around the world to help in Berkeley, California to accomplish this goal. From June to November we work intensively on the book shipment project.

With these books the Tibetans can rebuild their educational system, share knowledge, and regain a sense of cultural dignity and strength.

Yearly shipping costs for container distribution are over $50,000 each year. Support to educational institutions and individuals is far more throughout the year. Financial reports are published regularly in Gesar magazine.
