The European Commission has proposed that European Union states place a duty of 100 per cent on a range of goods from the United States in retaliation for new US steel import duties.

The EU has been angered by the US tariffs, which were imposed last month, and has applied to the the World Trade Organisation to have them overturned.

Europe has also asked the US for compensation over the steel import duties and has drawn up plans for sanctions if no offer is made.
