Along those same lines, Austin Goolsbe, Univerity of Chicago economist published a piece in the NYT on the Retail Apocalypse that has a different spin: Rather than the internet and online sales being the primary culprit, he proffers that discount stores, big boxes, brick and mortar (Ross, TJ Max, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, and the like) are the primary movers in taking sales and margins from old line retailers. He also talks a little about the narrowing of the middle class mall shoppers.

Worth a read.
