To be clear, Trello isn't the competing product with SMAR. Jira is. But again, they are not direct competitors.

Totally normal for the dec/agile teams in an org to use Jira and the business/execution side (project and program managers) to use something like Smartsheets. Right now I'd say 90% of projects are managed using excel/ppt/slowly Microsoft Teams.

So again, Microsoft is kind of trying to fend off both of these guys in their seperate areas (Agile Development for TEAM and Project/Program management for SMAR).

I doubt MSFT will be successful fending off both. They have the leverage and current customer base thanks to Office365, but I doubt they'll create the best products when they are competing with companies intensely focused on specific niches.

In my opinion, it's a matter of time until MSFT acquires (or tries to) one or both, or these niche players chip away at the base of current O365 customers.

So again... I can see a case for owning both. With all of that being said, the do face competition from other smaller companies.
